Abstract
2(3) Piperazines of the formula <FORM:0836289/IV (b)/1> are obtained by heating and stirring or other wise agitating a mixture of a finely divided nickel hydrogenation/dehydrogenation catalyst and an N - (b - hydroxyalkyl) - 1:2 - alkylenediamine of the formula <FORM:0836289/IV (b)/2> wherein R1 and R2 are hydrogen or C1-3 alkyl radicals, provided R1 + R2 does not exceed C3, R3 is hydrogen or C1-2 alkyl and R4 is C1-3 alkyl, provided R3 + R4 does not exceed C3, said heating step being carried out in the liquid phase at about atmospheric pressure at a temperature in the range from 80 DEG to 125 DEG C. and for a time in the range from 2 to 8 hours, and subsequently distilling the total product of said heating step in the presence of said catalyst.
