Abstract
Primary amines are produced by a process which comprises reacting, in a first stage, an aliphatic alcohol in the vapour phase with excess ammonia at a temperature in the range 300-470 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst consisting substantially of iron and/or iron oxides to yield a nitrile, separating the excess ammonia, and thereafter reducing the nitrile in the liquid phase with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst at a temperature in the range 80-160 DEG C. and at a pressure above 50 kg./sq. cm. The hydrogenation is preferably carried out over a stationary cobalt or nickel catalyst using hydrogen in excess of that formed in the first stage, and the nitrile may be admixed with an inert solvent such as methanol before the hydrogenation. In examples hexanol and a C10 oxo alcohol are converted into mixtures of amines containing (1) from hexanol 80 per cent, and (2) from C10 oxo alcohol 77 per cent, of primary amine.
