Abstract
835,889. Billet piercing. WELLMAN SMITH OWEN ENGINEERING CORPORATION Ltd. Nov. 1, 1957 [Sept. 7, 1956], No. 27524/56. Class 83 (4). In the manufacture of a hollow metal billet for use in subsequent drawing, rolling or extrusion operations, a metal ingot 23 having a through-bore 22 is inserted into a container 10 and pierced by a punch 20 having a nose 21 of smaller diameter than the body of the punch but slightly larger than the bore 22. The ingot may be of steel and heated before insertion into the slightly tapered container bore 12 where it rests on a removable cup 13 backed by a bolster 15. The punch may be passed wholly or partly through the ingot. After piercing, the ingot and cup are removed by an ejector 18.
