Abstract
The invention comprises new thioxanthenes of formula <FORM:0835867/IV (b)/1> in which R represents an alkyl or alkoxy radical containing not more than 3 carbon atoms and their pharmaceutically acceptable acid salts. They may be prepared by reacting in an inert solvent a 2-alkyl or 2-alkoxy thioxanthene, in which the 2-substituent contains not more than 3 carbon atoms, with an alkali metal transferring compound and, simultaneously or subsequently, with a hydrohalic acid ester or arylsulphonic acid ester of 1-methyl-piperidino-3-methanol. Suitable solvents are benzene, toluene, dioxane and anisole. Suitable alkali metal transferring compounds are, for example, an aryl sodium, sodamide, an aryl lithium or an alkyl lithium. Examples are given of the preparation of compounds in which R is methyl or methoxy in each case using sodium phenyl to form an intermediate sodium compound of the 2-substituted thioxanthene.
