Abstract
A process for treating an iron bearing oxidic material comprises for a bed of the material with a solid fuel and sintering it by drawing air, with or without a gaseous fuel, through the bed which is maintained at a temperature of 1100 DEG C. to 1500 DEG C., the amount of air and fuel being sufficient to reduce the greater part of the reducible metallic oxides to metal and the bed composition being such that the slag is fluid enough to envelope the liberated metal and prevent re-oxidation. In order that the slag may be fluid, lime may be added to give a base/acid ratio of 1 : 1 to 5 : 1 and a boron of calcium oxide, may be added to stabilize any dicalcium silicate formed. The material and fuel may be formed into agglomerates which may be coated with lime.
