Abstract
The invention comprises salts of alginic acid with primary, secondary and tertiary amines of 12-24 carbon atoms, the salts being soluble in methanol to the extent of at least 1% and precipitated when 1 volume of such solution is added to 10 volumes of water. The salts are made by contacting an organic solution of the amine (e.g. in carbon tetrachloride) with moist alginic acid and drying the product. The solvent may, however, be omitted. The products are soluble in various organic solvents or mixtures of solvents and are film-forming agents useful in barrier creams or as coatings on paper, textiles and leather. Suitable amines are tri-n-octylamine, di-2-ethylhexylamine and mixed C12-C15 and C18-C24 primary amines with tertiary carbon atoms. Amines with long straight chains are unsuitable. U.S.A. Specification 2,688,598 is referred to, and describes tri-n-butylamine alginate.
