Abstract
Materials such as metals, textiles, leather, paper, bricks, tiles, asbestos and cellular cements, terra-cotta and earthenware articles, and tarred felt, are rendered water-repellent by applying, e.g. by brushing, a composition comprising an aqueous emulsion of an organopolysiloxane, a pigment and a thermoplastic resin, e.g. a polymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride or acetate, acrylic or methacrylic acid or an ester or nitrile thereof, styrene, butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene, isobutene, ethylene or propylene (see Group IV (a)). Pigments specified are oxides of Fe, Cr and Ti; chromates of Pb and Zn; sulphates of Ba and Ca; and powdered Al, Zn and bronze. The emulsion may also contain siloxane solvents, thickeners and emulsifying agents. Very porous materials are preferably pre-treated with an acrylic or other synthetic resin or varnish so that the majority of the pores become blocked. The compositions air-dry rapidly after application. Examples are given. Specification 806,226 is referred to.ALSO:A composition for rendering materials water-repellent (see Group VIII) comprises an aqueous emulsion of an organopolysiloxane, a pigment and a thermoplastic synthetic resin. The siloxanes specified may be liquids or resins containing alkyl, alkenyl, aryl or aralkyl radicals and may contain Si-bonded H atoms. Thermoplastic resins specified are the polymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride and acetate, acrylic and methacrylic acids and esters and nitriles thereof, styrene, butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene, isobutene, ethylene and propylene. The resins are preferably made by emulsion polymerization. Pigments specified are oxides of Fe, Cr and Ti; chromates of Pb and Zn; sulphides of Zn and Cd; sulphates of Ba and Ca; and powdered Al, Zn and bronze. The emulsions may contain solvents, e.g. toluene, xylene, white spirit and solvent naphtha, as well as water and emulsifying agents, e.g. stearic and oleic acids, sodium diethyl sulphosuccinate, the double titanate of triethanolamine and stearic acid, the condensate of tall oil with 10 mol. equivalents of ethylene oxide for each acid group present, a polyethyleneglycolalkylphenylether, octadecylamine acetate, morpholine, benzyltrimethylammonium chloride and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. A thickener, e.g. carboxymethylcellulose, may also be present. The compositions when applied to the material to be treated dry rapidly in the air. Examples are given. Uses.-For rendering water repellent non-porous materials, e.g. metals, and porous materials, e.g. textiles, leather, paper, cardboard, bricks, tiles, asbestos and cellular cements, terra-cotta and earthenware articles and tarred felt. Specification 806,226 is referred to.
