Abstract
Aqueous dispersions for impregnating sheet material comprise (1) polymers of vinyl or vinylidene compounds, e.g. styrene, methyl styrene, acrylates, alkacrylates, acrylonitrile, vinyl or vinylidene halides, or copolymers of these, e.g. vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymers; (2) a non-ionic dispersing agent which is soluble in water up to about 40 DEG C. but insoluble at higher temperatures, e.g. octyl phenyl or dodecyl phenyl polyglycol ether or the condensation product of ethylene oxide and rosin; and (3) a water-soluble polyvalent metal salt. Plasticizers, e.g. butadiene-styrene copolymers, organic esters, or organic phosphate salts, fillers, e.g. calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate, infusorial earths or bentonite clays, and thickening agents, e.g. methyl or methyl carboxy cellulose, may be added. The salt may be a chloride, nitrate, sulphate or acetate of magnesium, calcium, strontium, aluminium, cadmium, tin, copper, iron, chromium and cobalt. The pH of the latex is preferably kept between 6.0 and 7.0 by adding a buffer, e.g. alkali or alkaline earth metal carbonates, bicarbonates or hydroxides. Fabrics, e.g. cotton, flannel, textiles, natural or synthetic fibres, felted materials, mats or papers are dipped in or sprayed with the latex and heated at 95 DEG to 120 DEG C., whereby the dispersing agent is rendered insoluble and coagulation occurs.ALSO:Fabrics, e.g. cotton flannel, are stiffened by impregnating with an aqueous dispersion of a vinyl or vinylidene resin containing a water-soluble polyvalent metal salt and a non-ionic dispersing agent which is soluble in water up to about 40 DEG C. and insoluble at higher temperatures, heating to insolubilize the dispersing agent, drying, treating with a volatile solvent for the resin and allowing the solvent to evaporate. The resin may be polystyrene or a vinyl chloridevinylidene chloride copolymer. The dispersing agent may be octylphenyl- or dodecylphenyl-polyglycol ether or a condensation product of ethylene oxide and rosin. The fabric is dipped in the dispersion, stripped between rollers, heated by steam, dried in an air oven, blanked to the required shape and treated with toluene, petroleum naphtha, methyl ethyl ketone or cyclohexanone. The polyvalent metal salt may be a chloride, nitrate, sulphate or acetate of magnesium, calcium, strontium, aluminium, cadmium, tin, copper, iron, chromium or cobalt. The dispersion may also contain plasticizers, e.g. butadiene-styrene copolymers, organic esters or organic phosphate salts, fillers, e.g. calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate, infusorial earths or bentonite clays, and thickening agents, e.g. methyl or carboxy methyl cellulose.
