Abstract

831,868. Cremation furnaces. NO FLAME PROCESS Inc. June 27, 1956 [July 5, 1955], No. 19900/56. Classes 51 (1) and 51 (2). A cremation furnace comprises a primary combustion chamber 12 with a gas-fired burner 26, a cremating chamber 13 separated from chamber 12 by a tiled hearth 28 of silicon carbide and provided with rollers 37 for the casket 35, and an auxiliary combustion chamber 14 having a burner 41, a Venturi - like entry throat 43, a series of baffles 44 and a stack 24. Fuel is supplied from a pipe 82 to burner 26 through pipe 89 having a motor-operated valve 88 controlled by a pyrometer 57 mounted on a control panel 52 and connected to thermo-couples 27 in the chamber 12. Burner 41 is also supplied through pipe 86 having a motor-operated valve 84 controlled by a pyrometer 56 connected to a thermo-couple 42 in the chamber 14. Compressed air from a pipe 68 is apportioned between burners 26 and 41 by a piston 71 actuated by a flow control device 53 on the panel 52 subject to the pressure drops across orifice plates (not shown) in the fuel and air supply pipes. Pipes 74 and 77 respectively supply air from pipe 68 to valve-controlled jets 48 on either side of the burner 41, and to a valve-controlled jet 49 inducing draught in the stack 24. A damper 51 in the stack responsive through a control device 107 to the pressure in the chamber 13 maintains a constant predetermined negative pressure in said chamber. The burner 41 may be replaced by a catalytic element mounted in the rear of chamber 14 so that all gases passing therethrough must pass over it. Flame failure units 58, 59 on the control panel are connected to a solenoid-operated valve 83 in the fuel pipe 82 to cut off the fuel supply if the flame disappears from one of the burners. In operation, the furnace is first purged with air from the pipe 68, burner 41 is ignited, the door 32 of chamber 13 is closed on to a seal, and burner 26 is ignited. Hot gases from chamber 12 pass through flues 18 and 19 entering chamber 13 at high speed through staggered ports 21 arranged in opposite upper and lower rows (Fig. 2). The oxygen content of these gases is controlled to prevent flame arising from the contents of chamber 13, and vapours and volatile matter is discharged through flue 23 and the throat 43 into chambers 14 along with combustion gases and excess of air from the burner 41 and air jets 48. Combustion is completed and the chamber 14 around the baffles 44.
