Abstract

831,341. Valves. SAUNDERS VALVE CO. Ltd. Dec. 4, 1957 [Dec. 7, 1956], No. 37509/56. Class 135. A valve of the kind comprising a flexible diaphragm 11 moved relatively to a weir type seating 12 by a member 13 enclosed by a bonnet 16 and carrying a nut 14 which engages a screw-threaded, non-rising spindle 15 has a screw-threaded part 25 carried by the spindle outside of the bonnet and a co-operating nut 19 prevented from rotating by a fixed rod 22 engaging with a semicircular recess in a flange of the nut and serving as a means of indicating the degree of opening of the valve and of limiting the closing force which can be applied to the diaphragm 11 by engaging with the top of the bonnet. To provide for initial adjustment the flange 21 of the nut 19 is provided with a number of semicircular recesses, any one of which may be engaged with the rod 22. The pitch of the threaded part 25 may be chosen so that the indicator nut 19 moves the same amount as the member 13 or a greater or lesser amount. As shown, the part 25 is formed for attachment to the spindle 15 of an existing valve in place of a hand wheel 17, the hand wheel being fixed to a suitably shaped upper portion of the part 25. In a modification, the spindle 15 is made sufficiently long to receive at its upper end the hand wheel, or a chain wheel, and the screw-threaded part 25 is formed either as a sleeve mounted on the spindle below the hand wheel or as an integral part of the hand wheel. In another embodiment the screw-threaded part 25 is formed integrally with the spindle. Specifications 321,892 and 515,808 are referred to.
