Abstract
831,285. Making tubes; working at specified temperatures. PHOENIX-RHEINROHR AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT VEREINIGTE HUTTENUND ROHRENWERKE. April 15, 1957 [April 13, 1956], No. 12282/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of making metal tubes comprises welding together a plurality of slabs, heating the bar so formed to 1000‹ C. in a continuous furnace, rolling the bar to reduce its thickness to between one tenth and one twentieth, heating the edges of the strip so formed to welding temperature, deforming and welding the strip to form a tube and heating the tube prior to stretching it in a mill. Metal slabs 1, 300 mm. wide to 50 mm. thick and 10,000 mm. long, the thickness being 20-50 times the wall thickness of the tube to be made, are welded together to form a continuous line 2 which is heated in a continuous furnace 3 to 1000‹ C. After descaling by water pressure at 4, the slab is reduced in a planetary rolling mill 5 to a strip 300 mm. wide and 3 to 5 mm. thick. The strip produced is then polished and may be trimmed at 6 after which its marginal edges are inductively heated to welding temperature at 7. Rollers 8 then form the strip 21 while rollers 9 weld the seam to complete a tube 2<SP>11</SP> which is then reheated to 950-1000‹ C. prior to stretching in a mill 11.
