Abstract

Polystyrene base exchange resins, which have been used for softening water supplied to one or more evaporators and/or boilers, are regenerated by contact with blowdown water from the evaporators and/or boilers, so that all the sodium and potassium ions used for the regeneration are derived either from the raw water or from the polystyrene base exchange resin. The water which is softened with the aid of the resin may be subjected to a preliminary treatment with lime in order to effect a partial softening by removal of bicarbonate ions. In an example the polystyrene base exchange resin employed is "Zeokarb 225" (the word "Zeokarb" being a Registered Trade Mark). Specification 521,112 is referred to.
