Abstract
A catalyst for the polymerization of olefins includes an organo-metallic compound of a metal of Group IVb, a halogen-containing compound of a metal of Group IVa, Va or VIa and a minor amount of a catalyst adjuvant material containing readily available oxygen, e.g. peroxides, peracids, persalts, per-esters, and hydroperoxides. A Group IIIb metal may also be present.ALSO:Olefins are polymerized by treating with a catalyst including an organo-metallic compound of a metal of Group IVb, a halogen-containing compound of a metal of Group IVa, Va or VIa and a minor amount of a catalyst material containing readily available oxygen. A Group IIIb metal may also be present. Ethylene is the specified olefin, tetraethyl lead the preferred IVb compound, and hydrogen peroxide, ammonium, lithium, lauryl and other peroxides, persulphates, perborates, peracids, other per-esters, perhalides, and hydroperoxides are used as oxygen-containing compounds. It is preferred that 0.1 to 100 mols. of organometallic compound and adjuvant material containing 0.00001 to 0.1 mols. of oxygen, both per mol. of halogen compound, are used.
