Abstract

Titanium, or other refractory metal of Group IV(A) or V(A), is produced by simultaneously injecting its halide and a reducing alkali metal in separate and intersecting liquid streams into a reaction vessel under an inert atmosphere and keeping the mixture molten until the reduction is complete. In examples of the reduction of titanium tetrachloride by sodium, stochiometric quantities of the reactants (or a slight excess of sodium over halide) are introduced into an argon-filled reactor in intersecting streams from the top (up to 10% of the sodium may be introduced alone first), the reactor being kept between about 800 DEG and 1000 DEG C. during the reaction.
