Abstract

828,724. Stapling machines. L. M. K. MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. Aug. 19, 1957 [Sept 14, 1956], No. 28185/56. Class 89(3) In a stapling machine, the front plate 12, Fig. 1, of the staple magazine which defines one side of a guideway down which the staples are driven, is formed as part of a separate component 13, Fig. 2, which has limbs, 14 extending within and parallel with the sides of an outer channelshaped magazine body 10, the component 13 being held in position solely by interlocking between the limbs 14 and a channel shaped magazine bar 11 secured within the body 10. The interlocking means between the limbs 14 and bar 11 comprises, in the illustrated embodiment, inwardly turned portions 15 on the limbs which engage openings 17 in the bar 11. The body 10 and bar 11 are secured together by a central rod 20 which passes through pairs of lugs 22, 23, and 24, 25 on the body 10 and bar 11 respectively, the rod serving also to guide a spring 28 which acts upon a staple feeder 29 by way of a bracket 30 having side pieces passing through holes 31 in the feeder 29. The staple driving blade 50 s comprised by one end of a leaf spring 51 riveted to the base 1, the remainder of which spring bears against a channel-shaped member 55 which when the machine is operated, is caused to bear against the staples in the magazine to prevent them from being moved by the feeder until the operating pressure is released. The clinching anvil is carried by an operating arm 2 which together with the body 10 is pivoted to the base 1 by a pin 4. A leaf spring 40 riveted to the body 10 and magazine 11 has a portion 46 which provides for return movement of the operating arm 2 after a staple has been driven, and has a portion 43 which prevents withdrawal of the rod 20 and also bears against a surface 44 on the arm 2. When the arm 2 is rotated clockwise, a curved surface 45 on the arm 2 is brought to bear against the portion 43 to impose frictional restraint on further movement of the arm. In normal use the magazine 5 is held downwardly over the member 55 by means of small pips on the sides of the member 55 engaging in recesses 65 in the limbs 14 of the component 13. The magazine 5 is raised by disengaging the pips from the recesses 65 for re-loading purposes. The invention is applicable to a stapling machine in which the anvil is mounted on the base and the magazine is mounted in the operating arm. Specification 670,833 is referred to.
