Abstract

Class 68(2) [Also in Group VI] In apparatus for maintaining the pressure in a submerged chamber equal to that of the surrounding water the supply of air to the chamber 43, through tube 40, is controlled by a diaphragm actuated valve 37, the remote side of the diaphragm 29 being maintained at the pressure in the vicinity of the chamber 43 by a tube 33. The air supply 35a is connected to the tube 33 through a choke 36 and thus. increases the pressure on the right-hand side of the diaphragm 29 until non-return valve 35 opens to prevent further rise. Similarly, if the chamber 43 is raised the excess pressure escapes through valve 35 to maintain the pressure on the diaphragm at the necessary value. At all times the pressure within the chamber 43 is maintained equal to this value since, if it tends to become too low, displacement of the diaphragm opens valve 37 to admit more air from the supply while, if it is too high, the excess pressure escapes through a non-return valve 24.
