Abstract
826,913. Automatic temperature control systems. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. April 17, 1956 [April 22, 1955], No. 11676/55. Class 38 (4). In an automatic temperature control system the power supplied to an electric heater is controlled through an amplifier by a signal corresponding to the difference between a D.C. reference signal and a D.C. signal dependent on the temperature to be controlled, and is also controlled through a further amplifier by a rate signal, derived through a transformer from the first-mentioned signal. As shown, variations of the temperature of an electrically-heated oven 1 from a value determined by a reference signal applied at 2 are detected by a bridge or other balanced circuit 4 which compares signal 2 with the signal produced by a resistance thermometer or thermocouple 3. Any difference serves to restore oven temperature to the desired value by controlling, through magnetic amplifiers 5 and 6, the energization of a transductor 9 the A.C. winding of which is in series with the oven heaters. To reduce hunting, a transformer 7 develops a signal dependent on the rate of change of the error which also controls transductor 9 after amplification by a further magnetic amplifier 8. Magnetic amplifier 6 serves as an isolating amplifier and has a gain of unity or less. Signal 2 may be in accordance with a programme as in Specification 797,419.
