Abstract
A process for cracking liquid hydrocarbons to produce acetylene in which the heat necessary for the cracking is produced in the hydrocarbons by burning a part of the hydrocarbons with oxygen or an oxygen containing gas comprises supplying the gas to a cracking space above the surface of the liquid and so directing the liquid on to the surface that a part of the liquid situated at the surface is burnt by the flame formed by ignition. In a preferred embodiment a diesel oil having boiling limits of 200-325 DEG C. is maintained in a reaction vessel 1 at a desired level by means of a level indicator 3. Oxygen is supplied through a nozzle 2 which is at a distance of 4 cms. above the surface of the liquid and is caused to ignite in the space above the liquid hydrocarbon by means of a small methane-oxygen auxiliary burner (not shown). Cracked gas leaves the reaction chamber at 126 DEG C. and passes to a condensing system in which the hydrocarbons, steam and carbon black are separated and the condensed hydrocarbons are returned to the reaction vessel <PICT:0824622/IV (b)/1> through a pipe 5. About 30% of the carbon black remains in the reaction vessel and this is removed by constantly withdrawing a portion of the oil through pipe 6. Additional diesel oil is added through a pipe 7. The cracked gas contains 5.8% of acetylene, 8.5% of olefines and 5.9% of saturated hydrocarbons. Steam or nitrogen may also be added to the oxygen. Specification 804,595 is referred to.
