Abstract

Nitrogen-containing fibres, e.g. wool, natural silk, polyamides and poly urethanes, are dyed with metal complex dyestuffs which contain less than one atom of a complex-forming metal per molecule of a complex-forming dyestuff and which are free from acid, water-solubilizing groups, with the use, as levelling agents, of polymeric N-vinyl-lactams together with the reaction products of ammonia and formaldehyde, acetaldehyde or butyraldehyde. A particularly suitable agent is polymeric N-vinylpyrrolidone together with hexamethylene tetramine, and by the splitting off of formaldehyde from the hexamethylene tetramine the fibres become formalized and are given an increased resistance to alkalies and an improved resistance to shrinkage. Other levelling agents, e.g. ethylene oxide condensation products, may also be added. Examples of suitable chromium and cobalt complex monoazo dyestuffs are given. The dye bath may also contain water-soluble salts such as sodium sulphate.
