Abstract
In preparing an adhesive, an aqueous starch, at least a portion of which is gelatinized, having a pH value between 8 and 11, is mixed with a phenolic compound selected from resorcinol, meta-cresol, phloroglucinol, catechol, pyrogallol and 3-5 xylenol, and an aldehyde selected from glyoxal, formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propaldehyde, butyraldehyde and furfural, and the mixture is reacted at 100 DEG to 115 DEG F. for 30 to 60 minutes, the amount of phenolic compound being between 2 and 20% of the weight of the starch and the molar ratio of the aldehyde to the phenolic compound being at least 1.25 to 1. Chlorine-oxidized starch, acid- and enzyme-converted starch and dextrin come within the meaning of the term starch. Clay, ground maize cobs, maize hulls, soybean hulls and wood flour may be incorporated in the adhesive. The pH value may be brought within the above-mentioned limits by adding sodium hydroxide and formic acid.ALSO:In preparing an adhesive for laminated and corrugated paperboard, which on being cured and dried, e.g. in a glue line at a temperature of at least 140 DEG F., forms water-resistant to waterproof bonds, an aqueous starch, at least a portion of which is gelatinized, having a pH value between 8 and 11, is mixed with a phenolic compound selected from resorcinol, metacresol, phloroglucinol, catechol, pyrogallol and 3-5 xylenol, and an aldehyde selected from glyoxal, formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propaldehyde, butyraldehyde and furfural, and the mixture is reacted at 100 DEG to 115 DEG F. for 30 to 60 minutes, the amount of phenolic compound being between 2 and 20% of the weight of the starch and the molar rates of the aldehyde to the phenolic compound being at least 1,25 to 1. The aqueous starch may be prepared by heating aqueous ungelatinized starch having a pH value between 8 and 11 at a temperature of at least 140 DEG F. for at least ten minutes. Chlorine-oxidized starch, acid- and enzyme-converted starch and dextrin come with in the meaning of the term starch. Clay, ground maize cobs, maize hulls, soybean hulls and wood flour may be incorporated in the adhesive. The pH value may be brought within the above-mentioned limits by adding sodium hydroxide and formic acid.
