Abstract
Phenol-aldehyde resins of the revolate type are made by subjecting a ligno-cellulose material, such as bagasse, cornstalks, wood or straws, to hydrolysis with acid in the presence of live steam under pressure and concurrently reacting phenol with the liberated aldehydes and ketones. Further aldehyde or a substance yielding an aldehyde and plasticizers may be added to form a moulding composition. In the examples: (1) dry bagasse was digested with live steam and concentrated sulphuric acid in the presence of phenol; (2) the novolate of example (1), phenol, sodium hydroxide and formaldehyde were refluxed to form a thermosetting resin; (3) the novolate of example (1), cresylic acid, sodium hydroxide and commercial formaldehyde were refluxed, to form a heat-hardenable resin; (4) the product of example (2), bagasse, hexamethylene tetramine, calcium hydroxide and glycerol were mixed on hot rolls, to form a hot moulding composition. In example (6) the novolate of example (1), calcium hydroxide, hexamethylene tetramine and zinc stearate were ball-milled with the addition of bagasse digested with milk of lime to yield a hot moulding composition, and in (7) the novolate resin of example (1), calcium hydroxide, hexamethylene tetramine and zinc stearate were ball-milled with bagasse digested with milk of lime and a further composition was added comprising bagasse which had been digested with 1 per cent sulphuric acid, dried and ground, aniline and an equal weight of furfural. U.S.A. Specifications 1,932,255 and 2,109,466 are referred to.
