Abstract
823,388. Closures for resisting fluid pressure. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO. Ltd. Jan. 17, 1957 [Feb. 3, 1956], No. 3475/56. Class 123(1) A closure for a vessel subjected to high internal pressure, for example, the valve chest of a steam turbine, consists of an inner cover 3 and an outer cover 3a which are assembled on the vessel and define a chamber 2 between them. The inner cover 3 is a sliding fit within the vessel portion A and is retained by a split annular key 4 which engages in a groove formed internally in the portion A and is held therein by a clamp ring 5 which may be provided with bolts 9 to draw the cover upwardly into initial engagement with the sealing surface 8 of the key. The outer cover 3a is secured by bolts 10. The space 2 is connected by a pipe (not shown) to a source of pressure which is lower than that in the vessel, for example, to the exhaust end of the turbine, so that the inner cover is only subjected to the pressure difference between the interior of the vessel and the space 2.
