Abstract

1,174,394. Pressure vessel closures. LEEDS & BRADFORD BOILER CO. Ltd. and H. M. H. PICKARD. 14 March, 1967 [14 March, 1966], No. 11121/66. Heading F2P. A door 3 is sealed in the mouth 2 of a pressure vessel by a primary sealing gasket 5, which is seated in a recess in the inner face of the door for engagement with an abutment face 6 in the vessel mouth, and a secondary sealing gasket 7 which is seated in a recess in the vessel mouth for engagement with the peripheral edge of the door, a space 8 between the gaskets being connected to a pressure source of fluid, e.g. air or inert gas, through a bore 9 to press the secondary gasket against the door. The pressure source may be automatically effective on closing the door to pressurize the said space. Alternatively, bore 9 may be connected to a nitrogen bottle. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the primary sealing gasket is directly fluid-pressurized by fluid introduced through a bore 11. Alternatively both gaskets may be directly pressurized, the pressure in space 8 further supplementing the seal. The seal effected by gaskets 5 and 7 may be supplemented as shown by one or a pair of inflatable sealing rings 14 and 15.
