Abstract
Raw wool is passed through a de-suinting bowl or bowls, a scouring bowl or bowls, one of which initially contains from 0.5 to 5.0 g./l. of a non-ionic detergent which is not substantially absorbed by the wool, and a rinsing bowl or bowls, fresh water being supplied to all three groups, together, in the case of a scouring bowl, with replenishment of the detergent, the temperature of the scouring bowls being higher than that of the de-suinting bowls and the temperature of the rinsing bowls being higher than that of the de-suinting bowls but less than that of the scouring bowls. Temperature ranges specified are de-suinting 70 DEG -110 DEG F., scouring 135 DEG -212 DEG F., rinsing 115 DEG -140 DEG F. Non-ionic detergents specified include ethylene oxide or propylene oxide condensates with fatty acids, tall oil, castor oil, various alcohols, lanolin, long chain mercaptans, and alkylamines. Liquid may be circulated through the bowls in each group in a counter direction to the feed of the wool. Part of the scouring liquor may be subjected to a grease recovery process. Liquor may be circulated back from the rinsing bowls through the scouring bowls and de-suinting bowls.
