823,167. Stuffing-box substitutes. BEATTIE, R. April 14, 1958 [April 13, 1957[, No. 12154/57. Class 122 (5). A stern tube gland packing ring comprises a resilient ring 1 channel-shaped in cross-section with the flanges 2 projecting inwardly, and a ring 3, 4 of anti-friction material recessed into each end face of the ring 1. Axial oil grooves 5 in the flanges 2 communicate with radial oil grooves 6 in the end faces of the ring extending a short distance into the rings 3 and 4. The ring 1 is preferably of oil-resisting rubber and the rings 3 and 4 may be of gunmetal, brass or white metal. In use the ring is axially compressed between the stern tube and the propeller boss.
