Abstract
823,076. Filters. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. May 31, 1957 [June 12, 1956], No. 18104/56. Class 46. In an oil filter an open ended container 2 for a filter 1 is mounted on a face 3, Fig. 3, having inlet and outlet passages 10, 9, by a bolt 4 which presses the open end 7 into a groove 8 and opposed surfaces 27, 28 of a relief valve unit 14 against the face 3 and the filter element 1 respectively. The bolt 4 is hollow, its interior communicating through apertures 12 with the outlet passage 5 of the filter element and through its end with the outlet passage 9 in the face 3. A spring 24 presses the filter element against the surface 28 of the relief valve unit 14. The unit comprises a cylindrical chamber 16 housing a ball valve 18 pressed against a seating 17 by a spring 19 normally to isolate the chamber 5 from container 2. The valve can turn freely on the bolt 4 to ensure when the device is used with the bolt horizontal that the inlet 20 to the valve unit is higher than the axis of the bolt. In modifications the unit is screwed to the face or orientated by a spigot and socket connection. The filter may be mounted with the open end downwards, the valve unit being disposed remotely from the face 3. One side of the valve chamber 16 is recessed to permit fluid flowing through it to force the ball 18 to the side remote from the recess out of which the outlet passage leads.
