Abstract
A tempered glass sheet having a reflecting metal coated enamelled surface is produced by (a) applying enamel to one surface of a glass sheet, (b) heating the sheet above the annealing point of the glass for a time sufficient to fire the enamel on to the sheet, (c) quickly cooling the enamelled sheet to below the strain point of the glass to temper it, (d) stopping the cooling before the enamelled surface is cooled below the temperature at which finely-divided metal will strongly adhere to it, (e) immediately applying finely-divided metal to the enamelled surface, and (f) allowing the sheet to cool to room temperature. Specifically a glass sheet is (a) coated with an enamel composed of e.g. lead borate and tin borate containing inorganic pigments, (b) heated to 670 DEG C. and 235 DEG C., (e) spray-coated with aluminium, and (f) allowed to cool to room temperature. Other metals that may be applied are silver, zinc, copper and brass. Preferably the glass sheet is vertical during the operations and the metal is applied by spraying back and forth across the sheet starting at the bottom and working up towards its top.
