Abstract

Artificial fibres of polyamides, polyurethanes, modified polyacrylonitrile or polyvinyl alcohol are dyed or printed with an aqueous suspension of a water-insoluble colouring matter (or dyestuff intermediate) containing a monohalogeno1:3:5-triazin-2-ylamino group. The dyestuff may be a nitro-, azo- or anthraquinone-dyestuff which is free from solubilizing groups. In the case of a dyestuff intermediate, it may be a diazotizable amine or a coupling component which can be converted on the fibre into a dyestuff free from solubilizing groups. Dyeing is effected from a bath which may contain dispersing agents such as sulphonated naphthaleneformaldehyde condensation products, sulphosuccinic acid esters, turkey red oil, alkylphenolethylene oxide condensates and soap, with or without protective colloids such as dextrin, British gum and water-soluble proteins, and electrolytes such as sodium chloride or sulphate at temperatures up to or above 100 DEG C. Dyeings on polyamide fibres may be after-treated with a hot aqueous solution of an alkali such as sodium carbonate, ammonia or ethanolamine. As applied to printing, the paste may contain thickeners such as methyl cellulose, starch, locust bean or crystal gum and sodium alginate, alkaline substances such as sodium bicarbonate, and the usual adjuvants such as urea, thiourea, thiodiglycol, methylated spirits, sodium metanitrobenzene sulphonates and aqueous emulsions of sulphonated oils. The prints are fixed by steaming. Numerous examples are given and numerous dyestuffs are specified. The dyestuffs may be obtained by reacting an azo dyestuff such as an aminohydroxyazobenzene derivative, a benzene-azo-pyrazolone, a disazo compound or a diaminoazo compound, or a nitro dyestuff such as a 2:4-dinitro-31- (or 41-) amino-diphenylamine or other 4-substituted 2-nitro-41-aminodiphenyl amines containing as substituents an acyl, a sulphonamide, a trifluormethyl or an amide group, or an anthraquinone dyestuff such as 1-p-amino-anilinoanthraquinone or 4-hydroxy-1-b -aminoethylamino-anthraquinone, the dyestuff in each case being free of solubilizing groups and containing a primary or secondary amino group, with a 2:4 - dihalogeno - 1:3:5 - triazine such as 2:4 - dichloro - 6 - methoxy - (or - 6 - phenoxy-, or - 6 - ethoxy -, or - 6 - dimethylamino -, or 6 - phenylamino -, or - 6 - b - hydroxyethyl - amino -, or - 6 - b - cyanoethylamino -, or - 6 - phenyl -, or - 6 - methyl - 1:3:5 - triazine. Numerous dyestuffs are listed. The Provisional Specification refers also to the coloration of cellulose ester (including triacetate), and aromatic polyester fibres and natural silk and to the use of dyestuffs containing a dihalogeno1:3:5 - triazin - 2 - ylamino group. When dyeing cellulose triacetate fibres swelling agents, such as diphenyl, dichlorobenzene, trichloroethylene and o- or p-phenyl phenol, may be added to the dyebath, and dyeings on triacetate or aromatic polyester fibres may be treated with a reducing agent before scouring.
