Class 34(1) [Also in Group XVI] In a device for driving a group of rollers arranged in two rows with the rollers of one row positioned opposite the gaps in the second row for drying a web of material, particularly a stretchable and shrinkable textile web looped around the rollers, the shaft of each roller carries a first pulley freely rotatable thereon and a second pulley rigidly attached to the shaft, a belt or chain driven by a primary driving shaft being led around the first-mentioned pulleys, the first-mentioned pulley of each roller being coupled to the secondmentioned pulley by two parallel belts passing one around each of the first and second pulleys and a common freely rotatable pulley, at least one of the parallel belts being more elastic than the material being fed, so that the pulley rigidly attached to the roller shaft is driven with a reduced speed relatively to the speed of the rotatable primarily driven pulley. As shown, a web 13 is fed by a roller 49 driven at a lower speed than drying rollers 11 around which the web passes, thereby tensioning the web Each drying roller is supplied internally with steam through a stuffing box, not shown, fitted on a shaft 15 supporting the roller. This torque is composed of friction forces and the force exerted upon the web by the roller. Thus, the rollers 11 are driven at speeds corresponding to the changes in length of the web due to shrinkage or stretch.
