Abstract
821,607. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 2, 1949 [June 15, 1948], No. 16021/48. Class 39(4). Nuclear fuel is contained in refractory bodies such as beryllia marbles 6 within a brazier through which a draught of coolant is forced. The brazier comprises a removable structure 5 of beryllia bricks. Further beryllia marbles 23 which may contain thorium surround the core the whole being contained in a pressure vessel 1 with a removable cover 4. Core marbles removed at 29 are replaced through a duct 26, 19 employing pressure locks. Coolant is admitted at 33 and passes through the reflector marbles 23 to ducts 11 in the cover of the core then through the core marbles and out into the space 2 and through the duct 35, some of the air passing round the outlet jacket 38 to cool the stressed parts of the shell. Helium or carbon dioxide is used as a coolant and the nuclear fuel may comprise uranium 233, uranium 235 or plutonium 239. Tubes 25 with closed ends contain control rods.
