820,999. Treating refuse. DANO INGENIERFORRETNING OG MASKINFABKIK, INGENIER KAI PETERSEN'S FOND. May 16, 1957 [May 17, 1956], No. 15658/57. Class 111. Apparatus for the fermentation of solid organic materials, particularly waste materials such as house refuse and vegetable waste, and especially for the production of compost, comprises a horizontal rotatable container having as closure at one end thereof an end plate which is attached to the container but which is axially spaced from the end of the container, a non-rotatable annular member containing an aperture for the supply of the organic material bridging the space formed between the end plate and the end of the container. Fluid such as sewage sludge may be supplied to the organic material during fermentation, and the fluid may be preheated. Fermentation of sludge may take place simultaneously with the fermentation of the solid organic material and the temperature developed by the fermentation can be utilized to dry the sludge. An aerating medium may be supplied to the organic material during the fermentation, especially if a dry fermented product is required. In Fig. 1, container 1, which is rotated by means of motor 8 and gearing 6, 7, is provided with an end plate 9 attached to the container by arms 10. The gap between the end plate 9 and the end of the container shell is bridged by non-rotatable annular member 11. Material to be fermented is fed from conveyer belt 13 into a funnel 12 and thence through an aperture in member 11 to the interior of the container, while fermented material leaves the container through discharge hopper 14. Air supplied by fan 18 is discharged into the container through orifices in pipes 15, some of the arms 10 forming parts of the pipes 15. Fluid, such as sludge, is supplied through pipe 32 which is provided with branch pipes carrying nozzles 31 ; one of the arms 10 forms part of pipe 32. Specification 756,373 is referred to.
