Abstract
An antistatic composition comprises a plasticized synthetic resin having incorporated therein a tertiary amine or a quaternary salt thereof containing at least one oxyalkylene group and at least one long-chain aliphatic radical. The preferred amines have the formula R-N[(R1O)mH]2 where R is the long-chain aliphatic radical, m is an integer from 1 to 50 and R1 represents the group (CH2)p, where p is an integer greater than 1. Preferred quaternary salts are those obtained by treating the preferred amines with a compound of the formula R11X, where R11 represents an alkyl, alkenyl, or aryl group and X represents an acid radical. In the above formul R may be caprylyl, oleyl, lauryl, myristyl, stearyl, or cetyl, R1 ethylene, or propylene, R11 methyl, butyl, or cetyl and X chlorine, bromine, or <FORM:0820541/IV (a)/1> Resins mentioned are polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl acetate, and copolymers of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, or vinylidene chloride. The plasticizer may be a diphthalic ester of octyl alcohol which contains small quantities of heptyl and nonyl alcohols. The compositions may be used for coating fabrics, in the manufacture of tubing, filaments, fabrics, and gramophone records, and in textile finishing processes.
