Abstract
Rubbery polymers contain 0.5 to 5.0% by weight of a phenolic antioxidant of formula: <FORM:0820486/IV (a)/1> in which each R is a tertiary butyl, alphaphenylethyl or alpha-tolylethyl radical, there being at least one tertiary butyl radical and at least one aralkyl radical present and there being at least one tertiary butyl radical ortho to the hydroxyl group (see Group IV (b)). The rubbery polymers are natural rubber, polychloroprene, copolymers of isobutylene with butadiene or isoprene, copolymers of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile.ALSO:Tri-substituted phenols of formula <FORM:0820486/IV (a)/1> in which each R is a tertiary butyl radical or an alphaphenylethyl or alphatolylethyl radical, there being at least one tertiary butyl radical and at least one aralkyl radical present and there being at least one tertiary butyl radical ortho to the hydroxyl group, are used as anti-oxidants in rubber compositions (see Group IV (a)). The preparation of di-tertiary-butyl-alphaphenylethyl-phenols and ditertiary-butylalphatolyethyl-phenols is specified.
