Abstract
820,324. Waveguides. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. June 4,1957 [June 5, 1956], No. 17352/56. Class 40 (8). A rectangular waveguide adapted to change the plane of polarization of waves transmitted therethrough is constructed in adjoining sections of approximately #/4 in length, where # is the optimum operating wavelength of the waveguide, each section being angularly displaced from the adjacent section or sections in such a manner that the reflective coefficients at the junctions of the sections are related to one another as in a binomial series. The waveguide illustrated comprises four #/4 sections 1 to 4 connected together by flanges 6, and the angular displacements between the sections 1 and 2, 2 and 3, and 3 and 4 are 12¢, 20, and 12¢ degrees, respectively. The reflection coefficients at the junctions are then in the ratio 1 :2 : 1. The sections of the guide may. alternatively, each be in the form of a cylindrical block having an aperture of rectangular cross-section therethrough.
