Abstract

818,950. Finishing yarns; twist tubes and driving arrangements therefor. SCRAGG & SONS Ltd., E. Aug. 14, 1957 [Aug. 23, 1956 Jan. 1, 1957; July 19, 1957], Nos. 25721/56, 56/57 and 22862/57. Classes 120(2) and 120(3) A longitudinally moving yarn is continuously false-twisted as a result of engagement by a surface of revolution moving at right angles to the yarn axis at the locus of contact whereby the yarn is rolled about its own axis. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, yarn 23 passes over a stationary guide 25, between contra-rotating annular friction surfaces 20 and 21, which are spring-urged towards one another, presented by resilient facings on members 27, 28, interconnected by a shaft 29 and gearing to rotate at annular speeds in opposite directions. In another apparatus, Fig. 2, yarn 13 passes successively over two friction surfaces 30 and 31 presented by the oppositely moving peripheries of resilient rings 35, carried by a pulley 36, and facing on a bead 37. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 3, two friction surfaces are presented by rubber members 45 and 46 (concave in plan and convex in vertical section) carried by cyclinders 47 and 410 which are secured in bearing liners 48, 49, and 411, 412, carried on flanges 416 and 417 of guides 413 and 414 supported from a fixed plate 415, and oppositely rotated through gears 418 and 419: yarn 43 passes through bores 421 and 420 in the guides and successively over the members 46, 45. Two yarns 53 and 54 are simultaneously false-twisted in opposite directions by apparatus, Fig. 5, comprising friction surfaces 50 and 51 presented by resilient members carried on a wheel 55 rotatably mounted on a fixed axle 56 having bores 58 and 59 through which the yarns pass: alternatively two yarns 63 and 64 are simultaneously twisted in apparatus, Fig. 6, in which three friction surfaces are presented by rubber members 65, 66 and 67 carried by cylinders 611, 612 and 613 mounted (for alternately opposed rotation) in the same manner as the cylinders 47 and 410 in the apparatus of Fig. 3. In a process for crimping multifilamentary yarn, Fig. 8, the yarn passes through a tensioner 75, at least once around grooved rolls 78 and 79 constituting a twist stop, over a heater 76 and friction surfaces 70, 71 of a false-twister (such as shown in Fig. 3) to a draw-off roller 77. As shown in Fig. 10, yarn drawn from a bobbin 85 and crimped by successive passage through a tensioner 86, twiststop rollers 88, 89, heater 810 and friction surfaces 80, 81 of a false-twister, may have its resultant bulk or stretch properties modified under the action of heat and tension as by means of apparatus comprising guide rolls 811, 812, feed rollers 813, 814, heater 820, feed rolls 821. 822, guide roll 823 and winding drum 824. Specification 797,051 is referred to.
