Abstract
818,077. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. April 10, 1957 [April 10, 1956], No. 10882/56. Class 103 (1). In a spot-type disc brake a split calliper 1, 2 is open intermediate its ends on its radially outermost face, and segmental friction pads 8 are carried by rigid backing plates 9 having parallel end edges 18, the backing plates 9 with the pads being inserted from the outer face of the calliper into a radial opening in the calliper having parallel end faces with which the ends of the backing plates engage and which take the torque on the pads and the backing plates when the brake is applied. The friction pads and their associated backing plates are removable radially from the opening on release of retaining means 15, 16. Rubber seals 12 prevent access of dirt to the piston and cylinder mechanisms 10, 11 of the brake. Specification 742,338 is referred to.
