Abstract
1335552 Spot-type disc brakes GIRLING Ltd 19 April 1971 [8 April 1970] 16553/70 Heading F2E A floating caliper disc brake has a stationary member 10 having an end plate 11 and a baseplate 12, Fig. 7 (not shown) with side flanges 13 from which extend arms 14 of U-shaped channel section arranged in base-to-base relationship on which the directly actuated brake pad assembly 22 is guided for axial movement toward and away from the disc 15. The arms pass through slots (21) formed in a limb 19 of caliper 17 and apertures 25 of friction pad assembly 22. The backing plate 24 of assembly 22 is provided with upstanding lugs 26 which slidably engage parallel surfaces 27 of a bridge piece 20 connecting limb 19 and a further limb 18 of caliper 17. Clearances may be provided between either the circumferentially inner or outer ends of arms 14 and the complementary faces of apertures 25 so that the drag on the directly actuated pad assembly 22 during braking is taken by the outer or inner faces of the extension of the arm 14 which is the leading arm. The drag on the indirectly actuated pad assembly 28 is taken by the caliper and is transferred to lugs 26 at the end of the backing plate 24 which corresponds to the trailing arm 14, and through caliper 17 to the arm 14 which takes the drag on assembly 22 thereby tending to pivot caliper 17 about lugs 26 causing assembly 22 to react at its leading end against the radially innermost face of arm 14. The force applied to the leading arm 14 thereby decreases progressively during wear of pads 23, 29.
