Abstract
Germanium and other metals are produced from their refractory nitrides or carbides or from organic compounds thereof by subjecting the starting materials to the action of an atmosphere of hydrogen at a pressure of at least 100 atmospheres while heated to a temperature of at least 400 DEG C., these conditions being maintained for a period of about 50 minutes to 3 hours. The hydrogen may be mixed with nitrogen or a rare gas, at least 1 per cent of hydrogen being present in the gas mixture. Examples are given of the treatment of titanium carbide, vanadium nitride, iron oxalate and iron formate, uranyl acetate, beryllium acetate, and of a mixture of iron oxalate and nickel oxalate. Reference is also made to the treatment of the carbides or nitrides of zirconium, thorium, niobium, tantalum, chromium and uranium. The hydrogen may be circulated through a high-pressure autoclave containing the starting material, gaseous by-products of reaction being removed e.g. by freezing out with liquid air.
