Abstract
A gas suitable for case hardening steel or for the protection of steels from oxidation or decarburization is prepared in the furnace or treatment chamber at working temperatures, by introducing into the chamber a mixture of nitrogen and the vapour of one or mode oxygen-containing organic compounds, preferably by bubbling commercial nitrogen through the liquid compounds or mixtures thereof. Typical liquids used are methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, ethyl methyl ketone or diethyl ketone. Further vapours, such as those of hydrocarbons, e.g. butane, ammonia amines, amides or nitriles may also be added. The conduit leading the vapours into the furnace or treatment chamber is preferably pre-heated to a temperature high enough to avoid condensation. The organic liquid is maintained at a constant temperature. When operating with more than one organic liquid substantially azeotropic mixtures are used.
