814,268. Chain gearing. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. May 22, 1957 [May 24, 1956], No. 16314/57. Class 80 (1). In order to reduce noise in a chain drive the links of the chain 14 are supported by an endless belt 16 of rubber or like material running round at least two of the sprocket wheels. Advantageously the belt passes round the smallest wheel and the wheel nearest to it. The belt holds the chain rollers clear of the bottoms of the tooth gaps and also damps any oscillations of the length of chain between wheels. In the case of a double sprocket wheel a single belt 161, Fig. 3, runs in a groove between the rings of teeth. To allow the belt to yield laterally it may have a stepped cross-section, as shown, or may engage the wheel groove with clearance. A reinforcing insert, such as a wire helix, may be provided in the belt. In the case of a single sprocket two belts are provided running in respective rectangular grooves, one on each side of the ring of teeth. The inner region of each belt has a semi-circular cross-section.
