Abstract

Textile material, foils or films of good resistance to gas-fading are composed of an organic derivative of cellulose or of a linear aromatic polyester and an ethylene carboxylic acid addition polymer which has been subjected to the action of an oxidizing agent before, during or after its incorporation in the material. The addition polymers may be composed of maleic acid or anhydride, fumaric acid, methyl, ethyl or propyl half esters of maleic or fumaric acid, or acrylic or methacrylic acid or copolymers thereof with styrene, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile or methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, butyl-, isobutyl-, pentyl-, or hexyl-vinyl ether. Acid anhydride polymers may be hydrolysed to the acid and the polymers may be converted to their alkaline salts. The polymers may also be obtained by a partial or complete hydrolysis of the ester groups of poly-acrylic or methacrylic esters or copolymers thereof with vinyl compounds. The oxidizing agent may be nitric acid, peracetic acid, benzoyl peroxide, persulphuric acid, acetyl peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. The polymer may be treated with the oxidizing agent in aqueous solution or the polymer and oxidizing agent may be added in solution to the spinning solution. The organic derivative of cellulose may be cellulose acetate, propionate, butyrate, acetate-formate, acetate-propionate, acetate-butyrate or benzoate or ethyl cellulose. The polyester may be polyethylene terephthalate. In the example, an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide and maleic anhydride-methyl vinyl ether copolymer is introduced into an acetone solution of cellulose acetate prior to spinning.
