Abstract
At least 1 per cent of dihydropyran is copolymerized with a vinyl ester of a carboxylic acid using a polymerization catalyst. The process may be carried out in aqueous emulsion, in bulk or solution in xylene, benzene, methanol, ethanol or ethyl acetate. Vinyl esters specified are vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, trimethyl acetate, stearate, benzoate and phthalate. Catalysts specified are lauroyl, benzoyl, acetyl, acetyl benzoyl, t-butyl, acetone and diethyl peroxides, ascaridole, monopersuccinic, -sulphuric or -phthalic acids, hydrogen peroxide, sodium or ammonium perborate, and sodium or ammonium persulphate. A reducing agent such as sodium or zinc formaldehyde sulphoxylate, sodium or zinc hydrosulphite, sodium bisulphite, sodium thiosulphate, calcium bisulphite, formamidine sulphinic acids, p-toluene sulphinic acid and diethyl sulphite may be added. Polyvinyl acetate may be added as emulsifier. The copolymers may be hydrolysed completely or partially, in an alcohol such as methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol or isopropanol, using sodium methylate as hydrolysis catalyst, or in aqueous medium using alkali or acid catalysts. The hydrolysed product may be used as an adhesive or in making films or fibres.
