812,834. Percussive tools. HOLMAN BROS. Ltd. Jan. 29, 1958" [Oct. 29, 1956], No. 32915/56. Class 124. A device for feeding a rock or other drill comprises a cylinder and a piston having a hollow rod, means on the outer end of one of these members to engage a fixed abutment, a body fixed on the outer end of the other member having means for attachment to a drill and provided with an inlet for fluid under pressure, a tube secured to the body and extending through the bore of the piston rod to provide communication with the end of the cylinder farther from the body, passages in the body communicating with the tube and the cylinder and piston, and means in the body for connecting these passages to the pressure fluid inlet and to a region of low pressure. As shown, a cylinder 6 is attached to a body 9 and is provided with a piston 7 having a hollow rod 8 to which is attached a ground engaging spike 13. A tube 15 is attached to the body 9 and extends through the hollow piston rod for such a distance that it is within the piston head when the latter is at the farthest extent of its travel. A valve member 18 rotatable by a handle 17 is housed in a hollow cylindrical socket in the body 9 and is provided with passages whereby either the cylinder, via a passage 25, or the tube, via a passage 23, may be connected to a source of fluid pressure, the tube or the cylinder being at the same time connected to atmosphere or a region of low pressure. The body 9 may be attached to the piston rod and the cylinder to the ground engaging spike, Fig. 1 (not shown). Other methods and means for controlling the operating fluid are described and illustrated in Figs 2, 4, and 5 (not shown).
