Abstract

987,659. Boring earth &c. SERVCO CO. Sept. 6, 1963 [Sept. 7, 1962], No. 35284/63. Heading E1F. [Also in Division B3] A well-tool, such as a tool for parting off and turning the end of a tubular conduit in a well bore, comprises a tubular body 16, adapted to be fixed to a rotatable drill string at 12, cutters 78 pivoted on the body, and an axially movable cam 62, connected to a spring urged piston 48, for expanding the cutters. A flow control assembly comprises an upper cone 34, and a lower element 35, welded in the bore 20 of body 16. A rod 41 is carried in the assembly and cooperates with a larger bore 73 in the piston which has a divergent upper portion. The tool is lowered into the conduit with the cutters retracted. Gas, water, or drilling mud is pumped through passage 18 and passes through openings 46 in the flow control assembly, between rod 41, and bore 66, and out through the bottom of the tool. The pressure above the piston increases to force the latter against spring 61, so that cam 62 expands the cutters until they engage stops 102, at which stage, rod 41 is in the diverging part of bore 73, thus allowing the pressure to decrease. In a modification an inverted rod 41 attached to the piston is provided, which co-operates with a bore in a separate member.
