Abstract

812,373. Tyre valves. HOSKING PATENT CORPORATION. Oct. 21, 1955 [Oct. 29, 1954; May 4, 1955], No. 30103/55. Class 135. A check valve for attachment to a compressedair container such as a tubeless tyre comprises a body portion including a hollow stem adapted to extend into the container through a hole in a rigid portion thereof, e.g. the rim of a wheel, a valve member seated within the stem, and an elastic body on the end of the stem which extends through the hole in the container, the elastic body being adapted to form a seal around said hole under pressure applied from within the container. In one embodiment, a metal stem or body 30, Fig. 2, passes through a hole in a wheel rim 37 from the inside and is held, with a shoulder 35 in engagement with the rim, by a nut 45. The elastic sealing member 38 comprises a skirt 41 for engagement with the inner part of the rim and has embedded in it a perforated extension 40 of the metal body. The rubber &c. material of the member 38 may be extended at 42 into the bore of the metal body. Although the body is screw threaded internally to receive a tyre valve 32 is may be provided with a seating 43 in the part 42 for a valve closure member of the kind shown in Fig. 10. The body is also threaded externally to receive a dust cap. In a modification, the shoulder 35 is adapted to carry a rubber &c. sealing ring whilst in a further embodiment the sealing member 38 is backed by a flange integral with the metal body 30, the latter in this case carrying a separate collar which serves as an abutment coacting with the inner part of the hole in the wheel rim. The sealing member 38 may be of circular or elongate form. Fig. 10 illustrates another form in which the material on the sealing member is extended on the exterior of the metal body 58 and is enclosed by a conical cap 70 which screws on to the outer end of the metal body and secures the body in place. The closure member 73 coacts with a seating 67 and is carried by a pin 74 which is slidable in a tubular member 75 threaded into the body 58. Fig. 14 illustrates a further embodiment which may be attached to the rim from the outside. Parts 82, 85 are initially separate from the remainder of the valve body and are passed through the hole in the rim whilst being threaded on a hexagonal bar which also passes through the bore of the valve body. The latter is then engaged in the hole in the rim and the hexagonal bar turned to screw the member 82 into the end of the valve body and draw the member 85 downwardly to expand the elastic sealing member 90. In a further embodiment, a steel sleeve 109, Fig. 27, is embedded in the elastic part of the valve housing but not bonded thereto so that air pressure within the tyre, which has access to the sleeve through a bore 119, expands the elastic part of the body surrounding the sleeve to improve the sealing with the hole in the rim.
