Abstract
812,337. Electrodeposition of chromium. METAL & THERMIT CORPORATION. Aug. 2, 1955 [Aug. 12, 1954], No. 22186/55. Class 41. Crack-free chromium plate is electroplated on to a metal, e.g. steel, article at a cathode current density of 0.5 to 8 amps./square inch at a temperature of 140 F. to the boiling point of the electrolytic bath which comprises 300 g./1. CrO 3 , strontium sulphate and sodium or potassium silicofluoride in excess of their bath solubility and a soluble non-catalytic compound of the same cation as the silicofluoride to suppress the concentration thereof so that the sum of the dissolved sulphate and silicofluoride radicals is from 2.5 to 10.5 g./l. and varies with CrO 3 concentration as defined by the area ABCD in the accompanying graph. The area JKLM indicates a preferred operating range for which the current density is 1 to 3 amps./square inch and the temperature is 145 to 160 F. Part of the CrO 3 concentration may be provided by the addition of non-catalytic chromium compounds such as sodium and potassium chromates and dichromates. The deposits are readily buffable.
