Abstract
812,219. Silencing suction rolls of papermaking machines. BELOIT IRON WORKS. Jan. 17, 1957 [Jan. 24, 1956], No. 1803/57. Class 96. In a paper-making machine, a high-speed &c. suction roll is silenced by making the offrunning sealing strip 67 of the suction box 66 of the suction roll 50 broad, e.g. 3¢ ins., and arranging that the felt F with the web W thereon leaves the roll 50 at a line which is radially over the strip 67, so that the vacuum in the holes 51 &c. of the roll shell is let down slowly. The sealing strip 67 may be supported pneumatically at 69 and 70 to compensate for any uneven wear, and may be pneumatically sealed at 71, 72. The strip 67 may be of hard resin, wood, laminated packing, &c. The oncoming sealing strip 63 may be of normal width, e.g. ¥ to 1 in. and may be spring-pressed at 65.
