Abstract

A catalyst for the polymerization of olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbons comprises a mixture of amyl sodium and a compound of a metal of Groups IVa, Va or VIa of the Periodic Table of the elements. Specified metallic compounds are titanium, tri- or tetrachloride, tetraethyl titanate, halides of zirconium or hafnium, vanadium tetrachloride, vanadium-5-oxychloride, the halides of niobium and tantalum, chromium-3-chloride, chromyl chloride, molybdenum-5-chloride, and compounds of tungsten and uranium; mixtures of metallic compounds may be used. The molar ratio of amyl sodium to metallic compound may vary from 1 : 10 to 10 : 1, preferably 1 : 5 to 5 : 1.ALSO:Olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbons are polymerized with the aid of a mixture of amyl sodium and a compound of a metal of Groups IVa, Va or VIa of the Periodic Table of the elements, in the absence of halogen-alkanes. Specified hydrocarbons are ethylene, propylene, butylene, isobutylene, butadiene, isoprene, styrene, and its alkyl derivatives, and mixtures thereof. Specified metallic compounds are titanium tri- or tetrachloride, tetraethyl titanate, halides of zirconium or hafnium, vanadium tetrachloride, vanadium - 5 - oxychloride, the halides of niobium and tantalum, chromium-3-chloride, chromyl chloride, molybdenum-5-chloride, and compounds of tungsten and uranium; mixtures of metallic compounds may also be used. The polymerization preferably takes place in an indifferent organic liquid, e.g. hexane octane, petroleum ether, gasoline, gasoline fractions, cyclohexane, benzene and toluene, and either continuously or discontinuously. The products may be purified, preferably by washing with dilute aqueous or organic solutions of acids, e.g. alcoholic hydrochloric acid, sulphuric, nitric, acetic, formic or oxalic acids. Solutions of these acids in ethers, e.g. tetrahydrofurane may also be used. The products may be used for the production of foils, injection moulding and pressed parts, fibres and threads.
