Abstract
Olefins, e.g. ethylene, are polymerized at a pressure below about 100 kg./sq. cm. and at a temperature up to about 100 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising a mixture of an organometallic compound with a compound of a metal of sub-groups A of the 4th to 6th groups of the Periodic Table and in the presence of an auxiliary liquid containing less than 0.01% of one or more ethers. The auxiliary liquid may be a hydrocarbon boiling in the gasoline or diesel oil range, e.g. a Fischer-Tropsch hydrocarbon which has been purified by hydrogenation and treatment with sulphuric acid and calcium chloride. The organometallic compound may be an aluminium alkyl or an aluminium alkyl halide, e.g. diethyl aluminium chloride, and the other compound may be titanium tetrachloride. A small proportion of air is admitted to the ethylene, which is added continuously in the example. In comparative tests 0.01 to 0.1% of dibutyl ether is present in the auxiliary liquid.
