Abstract
809,404. Coiling. PERKINS MACHINE & GEAR CO. Sept. 17, 1957, No. 29180/57. Class 83 (4). A machine for coiling wire helices includes a coiling abutment against which the wire is fed by co-operating rolls, cam means on a driven shaft for varying the position of the abutment and thus the diameter of the coil, cam means on another driven shaft for varying the position of pitch control means and thus the pitch of the coil, means to sever the coiled wire from its supply, and clutch means for alternately clutching in the drive to the feed rolls and the drive to the severing means. A wire feed roll 10 is fixed on a shaft 14 driven by gear 88 thereon meshing with a worm 84, rotatable on, but clutched to, a main drive shaft 80. A co-operating feed roll 8 is rotatable in an adjustable pivoted lever 18 and is driven by gearing from the shaft. A clutch 90 is reciprocable on the shaft 80 by a lever 180 pivoted at 182 to the machine frame. In its left-hand position, Fig. 7, the clutch engages and rotates the worm 84 and thus the feed rolls and in its right-hand position it engages and rotates integral cam and gear means 98, 100. The gear 100 drives a gear 106 to oscillate a rod 74<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, connected thereto at 110. The rod 74<SP>1</SP> rocks a lever 72 to rock a blade 66 pivoted at 70 to co-operate with a fixed blade 62 to sever a coiled spring from the supply. A spring detent 250 tends to hold the clutch 90 in its extreme positions. An eccentric 172 on the shaft 14 reciprocates an arm 166 to rock a pawl arm 152 to turn a ratchet wheel 150 fixed in a shaft 114. A pin 192 on a disc 188 fixed on the shaft 114 strikes, as the shaft 114 rotates, a dog 194 on the clutch lever 180 to swing the lever 180 and shift the clutch 90 from its left-hand, or feed-roll drive, position to its right-hand, or severing drive, position. From this position the clutch 90 is shifted back by a lug 98<SP>1</SP> on the cam 98 striking a dog 200 on the lever 180. The shaft 114 has secured thereon a pitch control cam 122, Fig. 4, comprising inner and outer relatively adjustable cup-shaped members 124, 126 formed with peripheral cut outs 128, 130. The cam 122 rocks a lever 132 to reciprocate a rod 50 which in turn pivots a lever 54 axially to move rods 44, 46 carrying right and left-hand pitch tools 40, 42 one of which engages the coil being wound and movement thereof during winding varies the pitch of the coil. The cam members 124, 126 may be so adjusted as to present an edge which does not rock the lever 132. A shaft 116, driven from the shaft 114, has a diameter control disc 142, Fig. 6, adjustably secured thereto in varying positions of eccentricity. The disc 142 rocks a lever 28 carrying a coiling abutment 26 so as to vary the diameter of the coil being wound. The wire is fed by the rolls 8, 10 through guides 24 and is turned by the abutment 26 up around a pin 32 to form a convolution of a spring.
